hitech

An acronym for the US Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, which amended HIPAA by adding the health breach notification rule. HITECH also added a tiered list of fines and prison sentences for violations of the HIPAA privacy rule. They include up to 10 years of imprisonment for a HIPAA violation with the intent to sell, transfer, or use identifiable health information for commercial advantage, personal gain or malicious harm.
